** Please note: Costume, prop and set hires are closed until February 2020. **

Our venues and resources are managed by the UNSW Creative Practice Lab (CPL) with the School of the Arts & Media office. Primarily for student and staff coursework and research, venues are also available to the Arts Industry for commercial hire.

We’ve moved our much-loved performance spaces, Io Myers Studio and Studio One, to an exciting new home. Just next door to the current buildings in the Gate 2 precinct, we’ve established the newly built D8 Theatres Building where we’ll continue our strong tradition of innovation and creativity.

Venue information

The space within Io Myers Studio was designed to allow for the creative mind to explore and execute works of every type. A fully flexible space, the Studio hosts a wide range of activities, from students working on their first productions to Australia's premier performance artists. The venue is suitable for live performance, video screenings and cross-media experimental works.

A prized teaching space, the venue hosts class presentations, production lessons and workshops, featuring several major School productions throughout the year. The venue also hosts several artistic residencies, with research into performance and cross-media a key focus. Recognised by the creative industries, many professional artists and companies choose to develop and rehearse their works in Io Myers when it is available.

The venue has timber flooring with the option of black tarkett over a performance area if desired. The mobile retractable Interseat bench seating means that the space can be used in a number of different configurations, and it can seat a maximum of 112 people. The Studio is well-equipped with fully flexible lighting, sound and video projection equipment; including a 4-metre remote controlled screen.

Studio One is an intimate black box theatre seating up to 58 people. While the standard set up is an end-on stage, the seating is flexible and can be reconfigured (please note - it is the responsibility of the user to move and return the seating to the standard set up). As well as a teaching space, student groups fill the calendar with a range of performances, comedy evenings, installation works and screenings - however this space is also available for external hire.

This space has an easily accessible and flexible lighting grid and sound system. With many layers of black paint hiding past sets and productions, this venue has proven to be ideal for developing or presenting contemporary art forms as well as low budget theatrical productions and small film shoots.

Hire Terms and Conditions

General

The hirer takes full responsibility for items used and must replace items damaged or stolen, or reimburse the UNSW Creative Practice Lab the cost amount.

Care for Costumes

All costumes must be washed or dry-cleaned before return. Please discuss with the CPL Designer if you're unsure of which items need to be dry-cleaned. All items must be returned neat, ironed and hung on coat hangers where appropriate.

Unless discussed prior to the hire period, all items must be returned as hired. Alterations may be permitted but must be discussed with the CPL Designer.

Care for Properties, Furniture and Set Elements

Drapes and curtains must be returned in clean and good condition. Do not use staples, nails or adhesives (including tape) to fix these items as it causes damage to the material. Please return these in the same bag you received them in (each bag is labelled).

Equipment

The CPL is not a hire company and does not provide insurance against theft or damage, only a service to the advantage of hirers who must ensure equipment is returned in good condition.

We recommend hirers have a contingency to cover unfortunate costs or take out adequate insurance should equipment be damaged or stolen.

Lanterns borrowed or hired are not covered by venue lamp levies, so any bulbs that fail must be replaced by the user.

The hirer must undertake to ensure that a suitably qualified person will be in charge of equipment at all times. The CPL will not replace, repair or maintain equipment that fails during a hire period.
