Taking the plunge into postgrad

For Karissa Woolfe, taking the plunge into postgraduate study was not an easy decision.

For ten years Karissa worked as a Dietitian-Nutritionist in South Australia.

This role saw her working in a variety of settings, working for government, in regional community centres and teaching at Flinders University.

But something was missing.

“I wanted to get out of my comfort zone; I hit a point in my career where I felt like I was stagnating. I’ve always loved learning and I’m a firm believer in up-skilling. But it was not an easy process- I had to reassess everything,” says Karissa.

Making the choice to relocate her life to Sydney and pursue the Master of Journalism and Communication at UNSW was thrilling but nerve-wracking.

“Leaving behind a secure job, I felt crazy but after weighing up options and opportunities- I wanted to be a quality candidate. I knew UNSW would give me an edge,”

I’ve always been passionate about communicating health messages and I felt the degree would equip me with the tools I needed to take my career to a new place,” says Karissa.

Now nearing the end of her degree, Karissa has recently finished an internship with Australian Healthy Food Guide Magazine and has just been offered an internship with News Corp while working part time as a Dietitian-Nutritionist.

She is thrilled to start the next chapter of her career.

“My advice to anyone considering further education is- just do it! The magic happens when you’re out of your comfort zone, when you stretch your mind and open yourself to new ideas, skills and people,” says Karissa.
