Before submitting your application, please read the information below to make sure you meet any degree entry requirements.


Domestic applicants

All domestic applicants must apply for admission to our undergraduate programs through the Universities Admissions Centre (UAC). Go to the 'Apply' section of the UAC website and you can nominate up to nine degrees you’d like to study in order of preference.

International applicants

If you are an international applicant currently completing one of the below, you must apply for admission to our undergraduate programs through the Universities Admissions Centre (UAC):

  • an Australian Year 12 (either in Australia or offshore)
  • NZ NCEA Level 3 qualification
  • the International Baccalaureate


International applicants who have completed, or are completing qualifications, OTHER than those listed above, must apply for admission directly to UNSW through the UNSW International Office.

Postgraduate coursework

All domestic and international postgraduate applicants

Excluding domestic Master of Teaching applicants.

All applicants must use the UNSW Apply Online service for admission to postgraduate coursework degrees at UNSW Arts & Social Sciences.

Please include copies of all relevant documents with your application. Once your application has been received you will be sent an acknowledgement. You will also be advised of any outstanding information or documentation and given instructions on how to provide this.

Domestic Master of Teaching (Secondary) applicants

Applications for the Master of Teaching (Secondary) at UNSW Arts & Social Sciences must be made via the Universities Admissions Centre (UAC) Postgraduate).

Applications for admission open in September each year for commencement of studies in Semester 1. The main closing date is at the end of October.

Postgraduate research

Eligible prospective postgraduate research candidates who wish to apply to a research degree in UNSW Arts & Social Sciences must submit an expression of interest to the relevant area. This allows us to complete a preliminary assessment of your application and to identify whether an appropriate supervisor and resources are available.

Preparing an application

Please follow the steps outlined below:

Step 1

Ensure you satisfy the admission criteria (find out if you're eligible here).

Step 2

Email the nominated representative of the School or Centre in our Faculty to which you are seeking admission the completed Expression of Interest in Research Higher Degree Canidature form found here (PDF) [270 Kb].  Please make sure to complete all section of this form and then save it before emailing it to the relevant admissions contact in your proposed School or Centre (contacts are listed on the last page of this form).

Your email must be accompanied by:

    • A detailed CV which pays particular attention to your academic qualifications and whether there were any substantial independent research components in your undergraduate and postgraduate degrees. Your CV should also outline your record of employment.
    • Evidence that you can meet the minimum requirements for admission, including transcripts that detail your qualifications and their grades (including the research or thesis/dissertation component), as well as information on grading systems at the awarding institutions, and evidence of your English language eligibility if relevant.
    • A sample of your written work. If you have completed a thesis/dissertation, please include this. If not, please provide copies of a published research article or long-form research essay.

    Next steps

    On receipt of these documents, if we are satisfied that all of the requirements have been met, the School/Centre will review your application to assess if appropriate supervision and resources are available. Your proposal will be circulated to potential supervisors and they will endeavour to find a supervisor for your project.

    If supervision and resources are available, you will be invited to submit a formal application to the UNSW Graduate Research School (GRS).

    It is important to note that an invitation to apply does not constitute an offer for admission to study at UNSW.
