Bachelor of Fine Arts (Studio Practice)/Bachelor of Education (Secondary)

The UNSW Bachelor of Fine Arts (Studio Practice) and Bachelor of Education is a four-year, full-time (or part-time equivalent) double degree designed for graduates wanting to pursue a career in secondary-school teaching. After completing the degree, you’ll develop your creative and professional skills and gain a professionally accredited education qualification.

The UNSW Bachelor of Education prepares graduates to pursue a career in secondary school-teaching and is recognised as an initial teaching qualification in both government and non-government secondary schools throughout Australia and overseas.

Bring Your Passion to Life

Pursue your interests in art and teaching by gaining classroom experience, professional learning and development and a flexible style of learning. Students can focus on a particular career path, through flexible learning, online courses and intensive courses to prepare them for a career in education.

The Bachelor of Fine Arts (Studio Practice) and the Bachelor of Education (Secondary) is targeted towards students who want to work as high-school teachers and develop their skills to work in the broader creative and cultural sectors. These sectors include galleries, museums and community organisations.

Through this degree, you’ll be well-versed in the areas of educational psychology and educational theories, pedagogy, assessment, diversity, inclusivity, indigenous perspectives and classroom management.

Real-World Experience

UNSW understands the importance of practical experience for career readiness. By your second year of study, you’ll develop skills in the classroom and gain practical experience in teaching. We have strong industry partnerships that provide our pre-service teachers experience working in, or even observing cutting-edge programs in classrooms.

You can complete your professional experience in a variety of locations including schools in Eastern Sydney, rural and remote schools, and overseas. By your final year of study, you’ll complete up to 80 days in supervised teaching at least three secondary-school contexts.

Specialise in Fine Arts

As a Fine Arts student, you’ll major in Studio Practice and specialise in two studio practice areas. You can choose from drawing, painting, printmaking, photography, sculpture and moving image. You’ll also broaden your skills by selecting from a wide range of elective courses across our art, design and media programs.

Students in the Bachelor of Fine Arts (Studio Practice) and Bachelor of Education (Secondary) should not choose the Art Theory major, as they will not qualify for NESA accreditation to teach Visual Arts.
