Social exclusion of children in China

Research on social exclusion of vulnerable children is undertaken mainly in OECD countries, in both discourse and policy. The project aimed to apply the concept to young people with disability who have experienced institutional or foster care in China. Using qualitative data collected through interviews with children, families, workers and officials in one site, the research analysed experiences of social exclusion of young people with disability and the policy responses to their exclusion. The research generated empirical data supporting the development of a range of indicators of social exclusion relevant to developing societies, which in turn lends further depth to the concept of social exclusion.
