Analysis of Poverty in Australia (2011-12)

This is the third in a series of reports on poverty that SPRC has produced for a consortium of leading community sector organisations headed by ACOSS. This report provides new estimates of poverty using the latest Australian Bureau of Statistics data for 2011-12 and examines how poverty has changed since 2003-04. Estimates are produced using alternative poverty lines, different samples and either include or exclude housing costs. Breakdowns are provided for social groups defined on the basis of age, family type, country of birth, State of residence and principal source of income, with a specific focus on those reliant on different social security benefits. The main results were released by ACOSS in October 2014 to mark the beginning of Anti-Poverty Week. A background paper describes the technical details of the methods used to produce the estimates.
