Analysis of Poverty in Australia (2009-10)

This project update the poverty estimates provided to ACOSS in an earlier (2008) report for inclusion in the first report in a new series of 'Poverty and Inequality Reports' to be published by ACOSS. The methodology replicates that used in the earlier study but updates the estimatse using data for 2009-10 from the latest Survey of Income and Housing (SIH) and Household Expenditre Survey (HES). Senisitivity analysis is conducted using two poverty lines (set at 50% and 60% of median income), by estimating poverty before and after housing costs, and by applying a series of exclusions to the data that reflect concerns about the appropriateness of certain data items when estimating poverty. The relationship between poverty and financial stress is also examined as a way of validating the baseline poverty estimates.
