The Engagement of Colonised Peoples with Empire (Algeria, 1830-1962)

Focusing on the entire period of French rule in Algeria, this project looks at the impact of the former colonial power on colonised people. It questions long-held views about the empire and colonised people’s resistance to European domination.

This research engages with currently political and social debate to offer new understanding of colonial history and its legacies. It looks at the individuals and communities working inside the structure of imperial rule and the opportunities to improve their lives and work towards emancipation.
