Gendered Violence Research Network

The Gendered Violence Research Network (GVRN) is a joint initiative of UNSW Arts & Social Sciences and UNSW Law. GVRN was established with support from the School of Social Sciences, is located within UNSW Arts &  Social Sciences, and has succeeded the Centre for Gender Related Violence Studies (CGRVS).

Members of GVRN aim to explore gendered violence – also known as gender-related or gender-based violence – as an expression of power and control over individuals or groups because of their gender.

The Network uses the broad term ‘gendered violence’ to reflect its impact on all population groups, although it is clear that women and children are disproportionately affected.

Our research interests span sexual assault, rape, domestic violence, family violence, child sexual abuse and adult survivors, sexual harassment, trafficking for domestic and sexual slavery, and girl child infanticide. These abuses can occur in private contexts such as the immediate family and extended family networks, as well as in community settings and intrastate or interstate conflict.

  • Contribute to the body of evidence addressing the causes, consequences and intervention strategies for gendered violence in Australia and internationally.
  • Combine research excellence and practitioner knowledge to encourage innovation and good practice.
  • Promote informed, evidence-based discussion of policy and practice with the goal of reducing and mitigating the harmful effects of gendered violence.

  • Undertake rigorous and reliable multi-disciplinary research which focuses on ‘real-world’ outcomes.
  • Prioritise engagement with key communities, especially service providers and service users.
  • Incorporate victim and survivor voices into its research, particularly those from marginalised populations.

Activities undertaken by Network members include research projects, roundtable discussions, seminars, and knowledge dissemination.

Asia Pacific conference

In 2015, GVRN held the inaugural Asia-Pacific conference on Gendered Violence and Violations at UNSW Australia in Sydney. The conference took place from 10 - 12 February and aimed to facilitate the exchange of perspectives, ideas and strategies between countries, regions and sectors.

The GVRN conference focused on the following themes:

  • Investigating psycho-social, therapeutic and prevention interventions for gendered violence and violations.
  • Engaging with policy and legal responses to gendered violence and violations.
  • Exploring conceptualisations and representations of gendered violence and violations.

Watch a short video about the Asia-Pacific conference on Gendered Violence and Violations presented by UNSW Vice-Chancellor Professor Ian Jacobs.
