Yong Zhong

Researcher

I am a researcher working at the School of Humanities and Languages of University of NSW. I am also Chutian Endowment Professor of Yangtze University, Endowment Professor of Northwest University and Chief Partnership Officer of Immistudy.

I got my PhD in international communication from Macquarie University, Australia and prior to that, a BA and MA from Guangzhou Foreign Studies University, China.

Researchwise, I have been active in areas of media, communication, translation, EAP and ethnography. Now I am focused in teaching methodology, cognitive learning in relation to Chinese language writing and activism in translation/interpreting.

I have given lectures and seminars at over 10 Australian universities (e.g., ANU, Sydney Uni and Macquarie) and over 300 international universities (e.g., Peking Uni, Nanjing Uni, HK Polytechnique University, Taipei Normal University, Posnan University, Veranasi University and Copernicus University)

I strive to combine research to teaching practice. As a result of continuous efforts, I was awarded an Australian Learning and Teaching Council citation in 2009 for innovative teaching and a FASS (UNSW) Dean's award for best contribution to the scholarship of learning and teaching. This research and teaching combined approach has enhanced student learning experiences as is evident in the following videos:

  1. Live Translation @ http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wG3R-LdDMaE
  2. Illusion of Accuracy @ http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lZXfXmFrm_0
  3. Cartoons of Translation @ http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tPeKjMnym6M
  4. Caged Animals @ http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RvB8AdS0c4A

I had an interest in scholarly work in relation to the Chinese tradition of debating. For my writings and other involvement in the area, search the internet for 钟勇, 大专辩论.

I am also a research-based independent film-maker with productions including a documentary French Way of Learning, which was entered into the 2005 Guangzhou International Documentary Festival.  The documentary is available @ http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xp_6FQxN_N4
