Mobilising Pierre Bourdieu's Theory to Understand the Role of Supplementary Education: A Chinese Story



In China, an increasing number of students are involved in supplementary education, that is, fee-charging private tutoring in academic school subjects. This phenomenon has raised concerns about equity in education.This study mobilises Bourdieu's concepts of 'field','capital' and 'habitus' as a methodology to understand supplementary education in relation to problems of education equity in China.
