Rorden Wilkinson

Professor of International Political Economy
PVC, Education & Student Experience.

Rorden Wilkinson is the Pro Vice-Chancellor, Education & Student Experience, at UNSW and Professor of International Political Economy in the School of Social Sciences.  He is a passionate advocate of higher education and the role teaching and research play in shaping student futures.  His leadership interests lie in experiential learning, educational technologies, virtual and augmented reality, institutional innovation and cultural change. He is a champion of student participation in all aspects of university life.

Rorden is an expert on international trade (especially the World Trade Organization), global governance and development with a particular interest in least developed countries and institutional crises.  He is also interested in the relationship between popular culture and global politics, both inside and beyond the classroom.  His most recent books include (with Thomas G. Weiss) Rethinking Global Governance (Polity, 2019), (edited with Thomas G. Weiss) International Organization and Global Governance (Routledge, second edition 2018), (edited with Synne L. Dyvik and Jan Selby) What's the Point of International Relations? (Routledge, 2017) and What’s Wrong with the WTO and How to Fix it (Polity, 2014).  His latest book Future Global Governance will be published by Routledge in 2021.

Rorden co-edits the critically acclaimed Global Institutions series for Routledge. He is a member of the editorial board of the international public policy journal Global Governance, a Fellow of both the Academy of Social Sciences and of the Royal Society of Arts, and the 2014 recipient of the International Studies Association Society for Women in International Political Economy (SWIPE) Mentoring Award. He was awarded the Johan Skytte International Manuscript Workshop Award for his 2014 book What’s Wrong with the WTO and How to Fix It. He has served as a Vice President of the International Studies Association as well as an expert member on a number of high-level panels including the Commonwealth Consultative Committee Expert Group on Trade, the Least Developed Countries IV Istanbul Programme of Action Monitor, and the World Economic Forum (WEF)/International Centre for Trade and Sustainable Development (ICTSD) E15 Initiative.

Before joining UNSW in February 2020, Rorden was Deputy Pro-Vice-Chancellor, Education and Innovation, and Professor of Global Political Economy, at the University of Sussex.  Prior to that he was Professor of International Political Economy and Research Director of the Brooks World Poverty Institute at the University of Manchester, where he was based for 17 years.  He has held visiting positions at, among other institutions, Brown University, Wellesley College, and the Australian National University.
