Kari Lancaster

Senior Research Fellow
Senior Lecturer

Dr Kari Lancaster is a Senior Research Fellow and Scientia Fellow at the Centre for Social Research in Health (CSRH) at UNSW, and an Honorary Associate Professor at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine.

Kari is an interdisciplinary, qualitative social researcher in health, with a background in law and policy studies. Her research uses approaches drawn from poststructural theory and science and technology studies (STS) to critically examine issues of contemporary policy and practice significance in the fields of drugs and viral hepatitis. Her research has examined how policy problems and knowledges are constituted, and the dynamics of ‘evidence-based’ policy. Kari’s current research concentrates on ‘evidence-making’ practices and critical approaches to the study of implementation science and intervention translations in health, especially in relation to viral elimination and addiction treatments.

Prior to joining CSRH, Kari worked as part of the Drug Policy Modelling Program (DPMP) at the National Drug and Alcohol Research Centre (NDARC). Past research projects include investigating processes leading to the establishment of overdose prevention and management programs, critical analysis of the emergence of methamphetamine and recovery as policy issues in Australia, rethinking approaches to participation in drug policy processes, and examining the science-policy interface in drug policy. Kari has collaborated with the Australian Injecting & Illicit Drug Users League (AIVL) to investigate how people who use drugs perceive drug policy, and also the Australian National Council on Drugs (ANCD) to explore young people’s ideas about responding to alcohol and other drug issues.

Kari is Assistant Commissioning Editor of Addiction, and a member of the editorial boards of both the International Journal of Drug Policy and Drugs: Education, Prevention and Policy.
