Thesis Title

An investigation of Mandarin-speaking interpreters' interactions with English-speaking legal participants in judicial and quasi-judicial settings

This project will focus on one group of legal interpreters working between the two most commonly spoken languages in Australia, i.e.English and Mandarin, and examine the current professional status they have as interpreters when working in both 'judicial settings' (e.g., courts and tribunals) and 'quasi-judicial settings' (e.g., police interviews and other legal settings) in Australia. Taking an empirical approach, this study notonly consider interpreters' own perception, but also looks at how other stakeholders in legal interpreting interact with interpreters in authentic scenarios, e.g., police, counsel, judges and lawyers.
