We welcome applications from those wanting to kickstart their research career in the Arts and Social Sciences.

However, prior to considering an application for a higher degree at UNSW Arts and Social Sciences, we need to assess your eligibility.


Doctor of Philosophy

Qualifications

Admission to the Doctor of Philosophy degree requires one of the following qualifications:

  • a completed undergraduate degree with Honours 2/1 or equivalent (for example at UNSW, this is graded as distinction level or 75%+)
  • a completed Masters by Research degree or equivalent postgraduate qualification that includes a substantial research component written up as an academic thesis, awarded at or above distinction level or equivalent
  • in exceptional circumstances, sufficient evidence of research experience that clearly demonstrates exceptional research skills and the ability to undertake the proposed research program

How to apply


Masters by Research

Admission to the Masters by Research degree requires similar evidence of research training, Applicants must:

  • have been awarded an appropriate degree of Bachelor with Honours from the University of New South Wales at a standard not below Honours Class 2 Division 1 or a qualification considered equivalent from another university or tertiary institution; or
  • have been awarded an appropriate award of Graduate Diploma by Research or appropriate Master by Coursework at an average of Distinction from the University of New South Wales or a qualification considered equivalent from another university or tertiary institution; or
  • have had at least two years professional experience of a kind acceptable to the HDC AND have been awarded an appropriate degree of Bachelor, at an average of Distinction, from the University of New South Wales or a qualification considered equivalent from another university or tertiary institution, and
    • satisfy the HDC that the qualification is at a level and of a character indicating research potential; 
    • professional experience per se is not enough to demonstrate research potential. Applciants need to clearly demonstrate some degree with familiarity with research techniques and/or the experience of carrying out research.

In exceptional cases an applicant who submits evidence of such other academic and professional qualifications as may be approved by the HDC may be permitted to enrol for the degree.

If the HDC is not satisfied with the qualifications submitted by an applicant, the HDC may require the applicant to undergo such assessment or carry out such work as the HDC may prescribe, before permitting enrolment.

All applicants must also meet the University’s English language entry requirements.
