Your pathway to becoming an education professional

The Master of Teaching (Primary) is an innovative site-based accelerated postgraduate initial teacher education program developed in partnership with the NSW Department of Education and local primary school networks. The program consists of core education courses, discipline-specific curriculum and pedagogic studies in the six key primary school subject areas and a minimum of 65 days of supervised professional experience, including a graduate teacher performance assessment, and an additional 90 days of practical in-class experience.

This structured 3-day onsite program will give Masters graduates the confidence to succeed from their first day at school. The program develops the requisite knowledge and skills to enable students to meet the Australian graduate teacher standards and qualifies graduates as generalist primary teachers, specialising in at least one Key Learning Area (KLA) in demand by employers.

Accredited teaching qualifications

The Master of Teaching (Primary) is an accelerated pre-service program. Once you have completed your Professional Experience 2 / Internship you will be eligible to apply for a job in NSW schools.

As a graduate, you will gain accreditation with NSW Education Standards Authority (NESA)* and will be eligible to work in all states across Australia, as well as internationally.

Site-based Study

You will be based in primary schools for three days each week for the first year of your program, working with primary age students and taught by experienced, qualified, accredited primary teachers as well as University staff.

We are the only school in Australia where 100% of the academic staff regularly visit schools and support our students on site during their Professional Experience. This level of engagement ensures our students are provided with the most up-to-date practical solutions that they can use directly in the classroom.

Program Structure

The program consists of

  • Core education courses in students learning, creating engaging learning environments, addressing student diversity, social and political contexts of education and professional inquiry
  • Discipline-specific curriculum and pedagogy studies in the six key primary school subject areas
  • 65 days of supervised professional experience, including a graduate teacher performance assessment, and an additional 90 days of practical in-class experience

Entry Requirements

Students wishing to study the Master of Teaching (Primary) must have completed a recognised undergraduate degree with a major in one of the six key learning areas below, consisting of at least six units of undergraduate study, with no more than two at first year and at least two at third year, plus at least two units of study in one or more other key learning areas.

Key Learning Areas (KLA) include:

  • English (literature, communications, linguistics, creative writing, media studies)
  • Mathematics (pure or applied maths
  • Science and Technology (architecture, physics, chemistry, biology, geology, design, computer studies, psychology, engineering, nursing, medicine, materials production)
  • Human Society and its Environment (history, anthropology, cultural studies, sociology, archaeology, geography, economics, business studies, legal studies, politics)
  • Creative Arts (dance, drama, music, visual arts, fine arts)
  • Personal Development, Health and Physical Education (physical education, family studies, sports science, health studies, human movement, nutrition)

NB: All graduates will be qualified to teach across the curriculum and will also have a specialisation in a KLA

Additional Requirements

Prior to their first school placement, all NSW teacher education students will be required to:

  • Undertake and pass The Literacy and Numeracy Test for Initial Teacher Education (LANTITE). For further details please visit the NESA website.

  • Undertake a Working with Children check

The Commission for Children and Young People Act 1998 introduced mandatory requirements for background checking of people working with children. All Teacher Education Students must complete a Volunteer Working with Children Check having listened to a child protection lecture online and successfully completed a quiz. Complete this check by going online at Working with Children Check.

  • Complete Anaphylaxis training

The NSW Education Standards Authority (NESA)* and the Department of Education (DEC) now require that all initial Teacher Education Students have training in managing anaphylaxis. Students must complete the anaphylaxis e-training module provided by the Australian Society of Clinical Immunology and Allergy (ASCIA) in conjunction with practice using an adrenaline autoinjector training device. The e-training is a free, online module available here.

  • Confirm that they are fit for their school placement and meet the inherent requirements of a teacher education student. This is to be filled out prior to EVERY placement through the online placement system (OPS)
