Graduate Certificate in Teaching

Overview

Update your secondary teacher qualifications

The Graduate Certificate of Teaching at UNSW is designed for qualified practising secondary teachers who want to update and/or add an additional teaching area to their formal preservice teacher qualifications.

To complete a graduate teaching certificate, applicants must have relevant studies in the teaching specialisation in which they wish to enrol and meet the entry criteria.

You must also be teaching at a school that will allow you to undertake Advanced Professional Practice in that specialisation as we do not find suitable Schools for this placement.

As this postgraduate teaching program is designed for working teachers, it is usually undertaken part-time.

Structure

The Graduate Certificate of Teaching is a flexible but intensive program and includes 25 days of school-based Advanced Professional Practice. This postgraduate course also provides teachers with a solid base for further study at the Master's level.

What will you study?

Our postgraduate teaching certificate consists of three core courses and one elective course.

Students who have successfully completed the requirements for the Graduate Certificate in Teaching may choose to apply for entry to the Master of Education program, and if successful, may be given credit for up to two courses.

Careers

Recognised teaching qualifications

The Graduate Certificate in Teaching is recognised as an additional teaching qualification in both government and non-government schools in New South Wales and in all other states in Australia.

Students gain accreditation with BOSTES and are prepared for employment with the Department of Education and Training, independent schools and other relevant organisations.
