Personalised English Language Enhancement

UNSW Arts & Social Sciences is launching a new course - Personalised English Language Enhancement

UNSW Arts & Social Sciences is pleased to launch Personalised English Language Enhancement (PELE), a credit-bearing course developed to help you to improve your communication skills in English. It is open to all UNSW students. The course codes are HUMS1005 for undergraduate students and ARTS5505 for postgraduate students.

Course information

This new course supports, encourages and guides you to take responsibility for your own English language enhancement. It consists of a lecture (2 hours) and a tutorial (1 hour) per week from Week 1 to Week 13. Both lecture and tutorial sessions are engaging and interactive and they help you enhance your communication skills by introducing a number of effective learning tools and resources for independent learning. In this way, you will be able to address your own needs and, at the same time, become an independent learner. You can check the timetable for HUMS1005 here and ARTS5505 here.

Am I eligible?

PELE is open to all students who are studying at UNSW but students from non-English speaking backgrounds will benefit most. UNSW Arts and Social Sciences students may take this course as either a Prescribed Elective or Free Elective, and students in other faculties may take it as either a Free Elective or a General Education course. Please contact your school office to find out if you can take PELE as a part of your degree.

How will I benefit?

Through hands-on learning, this program enhances your communication and independent learning skills, which are essential for your studies in Australia.

FAQ

What is PELE?

Personalised English Language Enhancement (PELE) is a free, non-credit bearing program developed to help you to improve your communication skills in English. It is open to all UNSW Arts and Social Sciences students.

Why does it matter to me?

Knowing is one thing; communicating it with language is another. We know from experience that some students struggle because of their English language skills. If you want to enhance your communication skills in English to achieve your personal goals, PELE is the right program for you.

How does the program work?

The PELE program is distinct from what is already available at UNSW because it does not offer English language training, but instead supports, encourages and guides students to take responsibility for their own English language enhancement. It consists of a lecture (1 hour) and a tutorial (1 hour) per week. Both lecture and tutorial sessions are engaging and interactive and they help you enhance your communication skills by introducing a number of effective learning tools and resources for independent learning. In this way, students will be able to address their own needs and, at the same time, become independent learners.

When are the class times?

All the classes are on Friday. Detailed times are as follows:

Lecture: 1 pm (all must attend)

Tutorial 1: 2 pm (PhD students only)

Tutorial 2: 3 pm (BA and MA students)

Tutorial 3: 3 pm (BA and MA students)

Tutorial 4: 4 pm (BA and MA students)

Tutorial 5: 4 pm (BA and MA students)

Students are required to attend both the lecture and one tutorial on a weekly basis.

What can I get?

You will be able to improve an aspect of communication skills of your choice. You will also know what to improve next and how. In addition, you will learn analytical, reflective thinking skills and autonomous learning skills, which are essential to achieve academic and professional goals while studying in Australia.

PELE Certification will be awarded to those who have completed the program successfully.

Will it affect my degree?

No. PELE is a non-credit co-curricular program and it only aims to elevate you in term of your language skills and studying habits to the level where you can get the most out of university life.

Who is eligible to apply?

PELE is open to all UNSW Arts & Social Sciences students, including commencing and continuing. This program is especially designed for students from non-English speaking backgrounds.

When do I need to enrol?

Registrations are open now and will close as soon as places are full. Places are limited, so we encourage you to enrol as soon as possible.

What are the costs?

The program is fully funded by the UNSW Strategic Educational Development Grant in 2016. Therefore, it is free this year and you do not need to pay for anything!
