Social work PhD completion scholarship

Applications for this award are invited from currently enrolled students of the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences in a post-graduate program in Social Work. It is designed to assist a student who is at risk of not completing on time due to financial hardship and may be sought for example to allow the opportunity to take leave from work commitments in order to complete.

Applicants must provide the completed application form, prior to the specified deadline above, and will be assessed on the basis of the criteria below. The decisions of the selection panel are final.

Eligibility requirements for the scholarship are as follows:

  • Applicants must NOT have previously held or be currently receiving any other scholarship (e.g. APA, IPRS, Faculty or School Scholarships, or any other financial support (with the exception of PRSS conference travel funding support);
  • Applicants Applicants must be currently enrolled PhD students undertaking study in a social work related area at UNSW;
  • Applicants must be at the writing up stage and have completed their data collection (or equivalent);
  • Applicants must be able to complete their thesis in the semester for which the scholarship is awarded;
  • Applications must be supported by applicant supervisor and Head of School or equivalent;
  • Applicants must be domestic students, and able to demonstrate they are at risk of not completing on time due to financial hardship.

The scholarship will be provided to the successful applicant as a fortnightly stipend with the following conditions:

  • The successful applicant will be required to enrol full-time in the semester for which the scholarship is awarded (i.e. devote 35+ hours per week to their candidature);
  • Leave of absence will not be available during the semester for which is scholarship is awarded unless there are exceptional circumstances;
  • Progress must be monitored on a regular basis by successful candidates supervisor in accordance with timelines outlined in the completion plan;
  • Failure to make satisfactory progress in line with the timeline may results in the cessation of scholarship payments;
  • Lodgement of the Notification of Intention to Submit the thesis is required by the date indicated in the timeline;
  • Completion of a mid-scholarship report on progress is required by the date indicated in the timeline. This report must be confirmed and signed by the recipients supervisor and provided to the Faculty Research Office. Failure to submit this report may result in immediate cessation of the scholarship;
  • No extensions to the scholarship will be granted, and offers may not be deferred unless with supervisor recommendation and approved by the awarding panel.
