Orientation Week 2006The Faculty’s Orientation Program started with the Dean’s Welcome and a Commencement Address given by an alumnus, Mr Richard Neville.
Richard, a social commentator and futurist addressed the 750 students, their family members and the Faculty in the Clancy Auditorium.
Richard spoke of his time as a student in the Faculty and urged new students to become agenda setters not followers. He argued that studying the liberal arts and humanities was increasingly important in times when capitalist philosophy dominates the approach to new discoveries. He also spoke of the need for students to become thinkers who challenged both the facts they are presented with and question why some facts never reach the mass media.
Students then went on tours of the campus accompanied by the Source Yellow Shirts before joining the staff of the Faculty for a BBQ lunch.
Throughout the week students were encouraged to seek help from the range of sources available. These services will each be highlighted in the newsletter over the coming weeks. For more information on the range of services available to students look on www.my.unsw.edu.au or speak to the staff in the Faculty Office in the Morven Brown Building.
Congratulations once again on being accepted to study in the Faculty!
