Dear Colleagues
I am pleased to announce that Professor James Donald has been appointed the new Dean of the Faculty of Arts & Social Sciences. The appointment takes effect on 11 March.
As you would be aware, James is currently Professor of Film Studies in the School of Media Film and Theatre. He joined the School as Professor in 2003 and since 2005 has been Associate Dean (Education).
James, who holds degrees in English, Education and Sociology, is a highly respected scholar who has worked across several humanities and social science disciplines. He holds a Bachelor of Arts from Oxford University and a Master of Science from London University. Elected as a Fellow of the Australian Academy of the Humanities in November last year, James has worked as an educator in a range of institutions and of course is well known as a critical advocate for the study of film, media and the humanities, both as an author and editor. He also has a strong background in strategic leadership and executive management, most recently in his role as Associate Dean (Education).
James’ key role will be to build on the recent structural changes in the Faculty, in order to further lift research performance and the Faculty’s capacity to recruit the highest quality staff and students. This will involve clarifying areas of strength, in consultation with staff, and managing resources accordingly.
I take this opportunity to thank Professor Annette Hamilton for her valuable service as Dean. Annette will be taking study leave for the next 12 months to continue her research in South East Asia, before taking up an appointment as Professor in the newly created School of English, Media and Performing Arts. I wish her every success in her new endeavours.
