Julia Sungyon receives her prize from a sponsor
On Saturday 21 October, I participated in the Japanese Speech Contest 2006 National Final held at the State Library, as the Chief Judge.
From UNSW, Julia Sungyon Hong represented the State of NSW in the Open Beginners Division and won the 1st prize. She delivered a speech entitled "Culture Shock--Learning from differences." Julia grew up in Korea, and lived and studied in New Zealand and Australia. She drew on her experiences to discuss differences in how people act and that the differences gave her a chance to expand her perspective and improve herself.
She received return tickets to Japan from Japan Airlines, accommodation and Japan local travel vouchers from Central Japan Railway.
The contest was attended by dignitaries from the Embassy of Japan, Consulate General of Japan in Sydney, Japan Society of Sydney and others.
Julia is a student of JAPN2001, Japanese Communication 2B. Her lecturers, especially Dr. Sumiko Iida and Mrs. Hiromi Masumi-So supported her in fine tuning her speech towards the National Final.
Congratulations, Julia and all those who supported her.
