As a new initiative of the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences, all new undergraduate students will be welcomed into the Faculty with a Commencement Address. The Inaugural Address will be held at 9am on the 20th February, with this year’s speaker being Mr Richard Neville.
Richard Neville studied for his Bachelor of Arts in the Faculty in the early 1960’s. During his student days, he created and published the controversial magazine, Oz. It landed him in a London jail on obscenity charges (from which he was later acquitted) and gave Australia its nickname. Since then he has become a best selling author and social commentator on a range of subjects from cyber sex, smart drugs and serial killers to globalisation, the re-invention of work and the new role of business in the 21st century.
Richard is renowned for challenging the way society thinks, urging people to be proactive and agenda-setters not agenda-followers. The 2006 Commencement Address is guaranteed to engage new students and provide a challenging but interesting launch to their University studies.
Please note that at the conclusion of the Address, parents are invited to join the Faculty in having morning tea with Richard Neville.
