A Jewish Studies Program has been established in the School of History following a commitment by Sydney’s Jewish community to fund the program over the next five years.
Dr Julie Kalman, recently appointed Head of the program, believes Jewish studies shouldn’t be a niche area of study because its themes are universal.
“The Jewish experience reflects the story of modern society – minority groups struggling to find their identity, their place,” says Dr Kalman. “It’s important we work towards having a broad student base of both Jewish and non-Jewish students.”
Dr Kalman is currently developing a major in Jewish studies for the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences. She also hopes to create opportunities for students to study overseas as part of their Jewish studies program, in Israel or the United States, and to develop a strong research program.
Dr Kalman’s research is in French Jewish history having completed a PhD in 2004 at the University of Melbourne on antisemitism in France. She speaks regularly at community events and works closely with Shalom College at UNSW.
A Jewish Studies program was previously run in the School of Politics and International Relations.
