The ‘well-being’ of your neighbourhood has a significant impact on your child・s development, according to a new book launched at UNSW as part of a workshop on early intervention.
Children and Families in Communities: Theory, Research, Policy and Practice, co-authored by UNSW・s Professor Ilan Katz, Acting Director of the Social Policy Research Centre (SPRC), examines the effect of community on children, parents and families as well as recent interventions and policy implications.
"There is a growing belief that the breakdown of families and communities is a significant factor in social problems, including child abuse and juvenile crime," says Professor Katz. "As a result, recent policy initiatives to tackle social problems have targeted communities as well as high risk families."
Professor Edward Melhuish and Professor Jacqueline Barnes from the University of London delivered the workshop・s two keynote addresses on the evaluation of the UK・s largest government intervention program. The workshop also included a panel discussion on the evaluation・s implications for Australia・s early intervention programs.
Children and Families in Communities: Theory, Research, Policy and Practice is co-authored by Professor Jacqueline Barnes, University of London; Jill Korbin, Case Western Reserve University and Margaret O’Brien, University of East Anglia. The workshop Sure Start and other Early Years Evaluations: The UK evidence base was organised by UNSW’s SPRC and National Investment for the Early Years (NIFTeY).
