The Faculty provides dedicated postgraduate research student study space with computers and storage lockers in the Faculty postgraduate labs in Morven Brown and Sir Robert Webster* buildings. Large banks of computer are also available in the UNSW Library Level 4**.

* Faculty's postgraduate student rooms in Webster building will be closed for refurbishment early 2008
** Postgraduate study space in the Library are allocated and maintained by the GRS (Please apply through the following link: http://www.grs.unsw.edu.au/resources/libspace.html).

The Higher Degree Committee through its sub-committee makes allocation of Faculty based study spaces twice a year in February and August. Allocations normally remain valid until the end of the calendar year in which they are made.

Places are only allocated to full-time and part-time students enrolled in a research degree program in the Faculty of Arts & Social Sciences; no distinction is made between Masters and PhD candidates. Students who have already been enrolled for four years in a full-time PhD program (or part-time equivalent), or for two years in a full-time Masters research program (or part-time equivalent) will be ineligible.

Priority will be given to:

Students are invited to consult their Postgraduate Research Co-ordinators about their options before submitting their request for Faculty space.

Because of high demand, it may not be possible to satisfy all requests, and the number of full-time places available may be limited.

Applications for study space should be submitted on the appropriate form and accompanied by a brief statement justifying their need for either a full-time or a part-time space.

The Application form, signed by the Postgraduate Research Coordinator, and the statement can be submitted twice a year to Dr Margarita Grebennikov, Dean’s Unit (for mail) or MB G14 (for delivery in person).

Application form can be downloaded in PDF or RTF

Notes

Because of the confidentiality of some information provided by applicants about their circumstances, the sub-committee does not include student representatives.

The users are invited to elect a Users’ Committee of three members, to liaise with the HDC through the Associate Dean (Research).

A space use audit may be conducted once a week throughout the year. Those full-time users who are found absent on several occasions will be asked to justify the continued allocation of a workstation.

All students planning to be away from the university for a long time (going for research field work for more than 3 weeks or on holiday) are required to notify Margarita Grebennikov. Because of high demand, their workstations may be temporarily given to those who are displaced or in urgent need. Absent students are allowed to keep their belongings locked up in the storages for the period of their absence.

The majority of the computers currently available in the MB Postgraduate Lab are Macintosh computers.

Workspace allocation process S2 2008:

4 August: Applications close; vacated workstations prepared for new users

11 August: Allocation date.

11-18 August: Swipe card access and access to IT facilities set up; students advised of outcomes (the applicant will receive an email confirming the space allocation)

18 August: pg study space allocations S2, 2008 take effect

NOTE: Because of high demand, it may not be possible to satisfy all requests, and the number of full-time places available may be limited.

For all enquiries regarding postgraduate workspace allocations, please contact Margarita Grebennikov on m.grebennikov@unsw.edu.au in the Faculty Research and Research Training Office.
