OPTIONAL COURSES
FOR POSTGRADUATE RESEARCH STUDENTS
2008

Courses on research methods and practical skills

The Faculty offers a number of optional courses for postgraduate research students. The courses for 2008 relate to aspects of research methodology or practical skills. These courses offer an opportunity to explore research methods in a particular field and to engage in cross-disciplinary seminar discussion with staff and students from different programs. Students can relate the coursework material to their own research topic.

Who can enrol?

All courses are available to postgraduate research students of the Faculty (PhD or Masters by Research) who are in their first or second year of candidature, except for ARTS5024 that is available to students in any year.

Space is limited in some courses. Courses are filled on a first-come-first-serve basis, except that PhD students and students enrolled for the first time will normally be given priority. Postgraduate students from other faculties or universities may be allowed to enrol subject to approval by the Associate Dean (Research) and upon payment of a fee.

How to enrol?

Students enrol in these courses using a special enrolment form (downloadable version available, or hard copy obtainable from the Faculty Office) which is to be submitted to the Faculty Office. PhD students need to have their form signed by their supervisor authorising the course/s as 'concurrent prescription/s' for their PhD program.

How many courses?

Three courses will be offered in 2008 – two in Semester 1. The courses are 12 weeks long or taught in intensive mode, worth 8 units of credit each. A minimum of ten students is needed for a course to run. Students’ work will be assessed. PhD students' actual grades will not appear on their transcripts, which will show 'Satisfactory/ Unsatisfactory' only. Masters by Research students will have grades recorded on their transcripts.
