Q: Can I enrol into a course that is currently full?

A: Generally, you cannot enrol into a course that is full. Class limits are set for a variety of reasons, including OHS regulations, allocated resources/equipment and better individual attention. However, if you believe that you have exceptional circumstances, you can contact the relevant School office.

Q: Can I enrol into courses when I do not meet the prerequisite/s?

A: Generally, you cannot enrol into a course if you do not meet the prerequisite/s. However, in some circumstances you may be able to enrol if you obtain written permission from the course lecturer.

There are currently two methods in place for obtaining written permission:

  • Course Enrolment Variation Form (PDF) If the course lecturer signs the form, you must then submit the form to the FASS Student Centre to be manually enrolled.
  • Email the course lecturer. If the course lecturer grants you permission via email correspondence, you need to forward the email to the Faculty of Arts & Social Sciences (FASS) Student Centre (arts@unsw.edu.au)  to be manually enrolled.

If you do not know who the course lecturer is, you will need to consult the class timetable. The coordinator will be noted under ‘Staff Contact’. You can then search for their contact details through the FASS Staff Directory.

Please note: While course lecturers have the authority to override course requirements, they do not have the authority to override program rules and requirements.

Q: How do I declare my major(s)/minor?

A: There are currently two methods in place to declare your major(s)/minor:

Your record will be updated with your declared major(s)/minor. Please note that if you declare your major(s)/minor after the start of Semester, your declared major(s)/minor will not be visible in your myUNSW account until the following Semester.

Q: Can I overload?

A: The Faculty does not encourage students to overload, as overloading may have a negative impact on your academic performance.

To be eligible to overload, you must meet the requirements outlined on the Application to Overload (PDF).

You must submit the completed application to the FASS Student Centre for approval and enrolment.

Q: Where can I submit/collect my assignment?

A: Each school has its own procedure for submitting/collecting of assignments. Please refer to your course outline for instructions or contact the appropriate school.

Q: My form needs to be signed by the Course Authority and Program Authority. Who are they?

A: Course Authority: This is the course lecturer. If you do not know who the course lecturer is, you will need to consult the class timetable. The lecturer will be noted under ‘Staff Contact’. You can then search for their contact details through the FASS Staff Directory.

A: Program Authority: For programs offered by the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences, the FASS Student Centre is the Program Authority. For combined programs with another Faculty (e.g. Arts/Law and Commerce/Arts) with the exception of Music/Science and Music/Science (Advanced), the non-Arts Faculty is the Program Authority.

Q: Can I start a language in Semester 2?

A: Generally, it is not possible to begin a language in Semester 2, as you must have completed the Semester 1 (Language A) course to be eligible to enrol into the Semester 2 (Language B) course.

However, if you have a background in the specific language, it may be possible for you to begin the language in Semester 2. For the School of Languages and Linguistics to determine this, you would need to complete the online Placement Procedures Questionnaire.

Q: I will be in my final year next year. Do I need to do anything before I enrol?

A: It is strongly recommended that you contact the FASS Student Centre BEFORE enrolling for your first semester of your final year to check your progression with regard to your program requirements. Checking your progress PRIOR TO enrolling for the first semester of your final year gives you the maximum opportunity to ensure that you will meet all your program requirements by the end of the year and graduate on time.

Q: I am in my final Semester. Do I need to notify the Faculty?

A: No, you do not need to notify the Faculty if you believe you are in your final Semester. The system will automatically identify you as a Potential Graduand and FASS Student Centre staff will conduct Graduation checking towards the end of the Semester.

You can check if you are listed as a Potential Graduand in your myUNSW account, under ‘Graduation Details’. If you have not been identified as a Potential Graduand and believe you should be, please contact the FASS Student Centre.

Q: The class timetable shows there are still places available in a course, yet I cannot enrol. Why?

A: The class timetable is refreshed every 24 hours. The current information is available via your myUNSW account. You should keep checking your myUNSW account for current enrolment availabilities.
