1. What attracted you most to the program?

First of all, the UNSW Kensington Campus was breathtaking. Secondly, during open day I was greeted by some friendly ‘Yellow-Shirts’ who introduced me to campus life, including the Library, Faculties and, of course, the Unibar! This made me feel at home. Lastly, the social work program offered at UNSW is the most highly acclaimed program in the state. I had also heard from word-of-mouth that the quality of education at UNSW was of a high standard. This made my decision easy.

2. What were the key skills and knowledge you gained by studying the program?

I have learnt so much from the lecturers, tutors and students at UNSW. I have learnt; the ‘art’ of critical analysis, developed skills that are much needed when working with individuals, families and groups; as well as expanded my knowledge on social philosophy and theories.

3. What did you enjoy most about the program and why?

My program was very ‘practice-based’. Every week we were taking part in role-plays, theorising about the social world as well as conducting real research studies. This work boosted my confidence and continues to assure me that I have gained the skills needed to succeed in my field of choice.

4. Are you currently employed and does your program relate to this employment?

I am not employed as of yet, however, I have been given the most life-changing opportunities as a result of being a part of the Social Work / Social Science program at UNSW. For example, due to the policy and research skills I had gained from my courses, I was given the opportunity to travel to the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees in Geneva, Switzerland. I, with a small group consisting of students and supervisors, advocated for changes in international policy at the UN Standing Committee and NGO Consultations. This has given me a significant boost in my career.

5. What inspires you most about your area of interest/career?

I am most inspired by the lecturers and tutors who are a part of the UNSW program. Not only have they taught me so much about the world, they are active in seeking changes in national and international society, policy and law. Each day I aspire to be among these people who continue to contribute to the world of social work.
