Three Minute Thesis Competition 2011

Postgraduate research candidates are invited to participate in the 2011 FASS 3 Minute Thesis CompetitionThree minute thesis

Competitors have 3 minutes to give a compelling presentation on their thesis topic. The top three FASS finalists will compete in the UNSW Interfaculty Final. The winner of the interfaculty final will participate in the Australia and New Zealand Three Minute Thesis Competition, at the University of Western Australia. Eligibility

• You must be an enrolled PhD or Masters by Research student
• You may not be ‘overtime’, i.e. enrolled for more than 4 years full-time equivalent (PhD) or 2 years equivalent (Masters)
• You may have submitted your thesis for examination, but the examination cannot have been completed before applications close
• You must be available to compete in all the events listed below

 Presentation

• Postgraduate research candidates will have three minutes to present a compelling oration on their thesis topic and its significance, in language appropriate to an intelligent but non-specialist audience
• Competitors exceeding 3 minutes will be disqualified (a clock will be in easy view)
• You are allowed one PowerPoint slide (no slide transitions)
• No additional electronic media, such as sound and video files, are allowed
• No additional props ( e.g costumes, instruments or apparatus) are allowed

Judging

Three FASS students go through to the UNSW Interfaculty Final. Two will be selected by a panel of judges; one by the audience. Each competitor will be given a score out of ten for each criterion below:

1. Communication style - was the thesis topic and its significance communicated in language appropriate to an intelligent but non-specialist audience?
2. Comprehension - did the presentation help the audience understand the research?
3. Engagement - did the oration make the audience want to know more?
The judges’ decision is final. If the audience’s first choice is also chosen by the judges’ panel, the audience’s second choice will be declared a winner.

FASS 2011 Three Minute Thesis Final
• First prize $300
• Runner-up prize $200
• People's choice prize $100

UNSW 2011 Three Minute Thesis Interfaculty Final
• First prize $3,000 - plus entry into the 2011 Australia and New Zealand completion, flights and one night’s accommodation in Brisbane
• Runner-up prize $1,500
• People's choice prize $1,000

Inaugural 2010 Australia and New Zealand Three Minute Thesis Competition
• First prize $5,000
• Runner-up prize $2,000
• People's choice prize $1,000

Fill in the application form (PDF) (32 Kb) and submit it in hard copy to Christopher Pruze (FASS Dean’s Unit MB 307 or MB 301). You will be informed whether you will need to attend a School heat in due course.
