Optional Courses for Postgraduate Research Students
The Faculty offers a number of optional courses for postgraduate research students. The courses for 2012 relate to aspects of research methodology or practical skills. These courses offer an opportunity to explore research methods and develop advanced writing and presentation skills in a particular field and to engage in cross-disciplinary seminar discussion with staff and students from different programs. Students can relate the coursework material to their own research topic.
Who can enrol?
All courses are available to Arts and Social Sciences postgraduate research students* who are in their first or second year of candidature. The exception is ARTS5024 which is available to students in any year. Courses are filled on a first-come-first-serve basis, priority will usually be given to PhD students and those enrolled for the first time. Postgraduate students from other faculties or universities may be allowed to enrol subject to approval by the Associate Dean – Research (courses for these students will incur a fee). Space is limited in some courses.

How to enrol?
Students must complete an Enrolment form and submit it to the UNSW Graduate Research School located at Level 2, South Wing, Rupert Myers Building. Please note that the Faculty Student Centre does not handle enrolments in these courses. PhD students must ensure that the form is signed by their Supervisor and their School’s Postgraduate Coordinator.

Quantitative Methodology Support Scheme - NEW FOR 2012
As part of the Optional Courses Program for Postgraduate Research Students the Faculty is pleased to offer a new service being trialed in 2012, providing one to one consultation and support to students undertaking quantitative projects as part of their thesis work. The support will be provided by an academic member of staff with expertise in the design, conduct, analysis and interpretation of quantitative research and will take the form of an initial one to one consultation of up to 2 hours with the option of up to 3 further hours to be utilized if required during the course of the year.
