Links to Sapmi and the Sami people
An introduction to the Sami people is just that: a useful overview, slightly dated (it does not appear to have changed since 1998) but quite informative for those who know little about the Sami.
Galdu, the Resource Centre for the Rights of Indigenous Peoples, has globalcoverage but a large section with detailed information about, and photos of, the Sami people. Highly recommended!
The website of the Swedish Sami parliament offers information in English about the history of the Sami people and their elected political representation today. The Sami parliaments of Norway and Finland also have websites, although only the Norwegian Sami parliament has some English pages.
The University of Tromsø in Norway and its Centre for Sami Studies provides many links to the academic research on northern Europe's Indigenous people, much of it in English. Right in the heart of Sapmi, in Kautokeino (Norway) is the Nordic Sami Institute with the mission "to strengthen and develop Sami language, culture and social life seen in a pan-Sami perspective". Another pan-Sami organisation working in Norway, Sweden, Finland and Russia is the Saami Council.
An important Sami cultural event is the annual Riddu Riđđu Festival. Another one is the Saami Easter Festival in Kautokeino. An interesting collection of historical photos of Sami life is available at the website of the Norwegian National Library, some more contemporary photography can be found here and here.
