Sydney and Australia are about as far away from Europe as you can get, yet European Studies at UNSW is flourishing. Many Australians, of course, are the descendants of European migrants and can therefore be expected to have in interest in the ‘old continent’ but that is not, I believe, the only or even the main reason why so many students choose European Studies. The European Union, which now encompasses the great majority of the continent, is Australia’s most important trading partner and a good knowledge of Europe therefore of great importance in many careers. Most importantly, perhaps, so many of the important concepts and ideas of our time have their origins in European culture that European Studies can give you a positive head start in coming to grips with the modern world.
European Studies courses are available at all levels, starting with The New Europe A and B in first year, and can be taken as electives or as part of a European Studies Major within the Bachelor of Arts degree or the European Studies Plan within the Bachelor of International Studies. Some students go on to an Honours, a Masters or even a PhD degree, usually a combined one.
The Centre for European Studies coordinates the interdisciplinary European Studies teaching program which draws on expertise from different Schools and Faculties at UNSW, but it also promotes research and organises regular guest lecturers, symposia, conferences and other events. So if you have any interest in Europe at all, please browse around these pages to see what we have to offer, and I look forward to meeting you in the corridors of the Morven Brown building some time soon!
